The Twentynine Palms Book Festival returns November 13-15 2025
The Mojave Hi-desert communities of Southern California include Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, Landers, 29 Palms and the villages in-between. These high desert communities are settled by unforgettable people. Many are artists. A careful observation of this art, and the artists, of the California Desert is warranted.
Creative people are instinctively drawn to the desert’s seductive mix of affordability, freedom, quiet and a connection to the earth’s natural rhythms.
In this, the second volume of California Desert Artists, California art and design historian Katie Nartonis delves into the stories of 13 desert artists and makers. These inspiring women and men live and work under the vast sky of the Mojave desert, and their work is effected by the quiet majesty of the desert's natural environment. In just the last few years, scores of artists and creatives from all over the country have joined this very special artist community in the high desert of Southern California.
