ABOUT FRANK HABICHT (German, 1938-2024)
In the Sixties, London became the swinging capital of the world with a new aristocracy of filmmakers, pop singers, models and photographers whose credentials where that they were talented, classless and young. The conventional art circles where rocked, the old order disregarded, fresh standards were set and expressed as: "let every human being do this thing". German-born Frank Habicht was there and became one of the photographers of the day, capturing the Sixties' style, the fun, the outrageousness, the new permissiveness.
About his work, Habicht comments: "It was simply a love affair with people. The decade projected poetry and craziness that was still uncorrupted, honest, and pure."
In 1969, the book Young London: Permissive Paradise by Frank Habicht was published in London. The book contained a collection of ninety-one photographs that exposed the duality at the heart of Britain’s society, capturing carefree youth contrasted with London’s elite and upper classes. About the book, artist Richard Prince commented: “This is the Do-It-Yourself Beatnik Kit” (in Richard Prince’s Outside Streak, Vanity Fair, Nov. 2023)
Pictures of Frank Habicht were also published in the sixties and the seventies in magazines and newspapers such as The Guardian, Twen, US Camera, The Sunday Times Magazine, and Esquire.
Rediscovered 35 years later by art collectors Françoise Lazard and Patrick Zuchowicki, Frank Habicht agreed to publish the Karma Sixties collection, a compilation of finest work where he captures some the well-known figures of the day - the pop idols, the models, the stars, as well as the ordinary young people enjoying the Sixties as they were.
An exhibition of the Karma Sixties series was organized in October 2004 at the iconic store COLETTE in Paris, followed by a pop-up exhibition in Moscow, opened by Paris Hilton.
